What a kick in the butt. After months of talking about "doing more" to connect with my clients and tossing around ideas, I'm here writing my first blog because I, as a stylist, got really inspired.
Last week Vancouver hosted the Skills Canada Competition (Skills Canada is a national, not-for-profit organization that actively promotes careers in skilled trades and technologies to Canadian youth - you must be under 22 years old to compete) and they came out to win! Now, just to be clear, this an event on a large enough scale that it was hosted at BC Place and it covers over 40 trade and technology areas in olympic-style competition that draws over 500 students every year!
But now, I was there for the hair - if you're a client you know that I'd coached (for my first time EVER!) two students from VIU to Provincials this past May in Abbotsford and I even got the honour of having one of my students up on the podium with a bronze around his neck *Proud Mama here* But, for the record, WOW! I mean, WOW!! These students at the National level blew me away! The creativity and technical skills of Secondary and Post Secondary students from across the country had me enthralled for hours; studying the subtleties of their techniques including the use of a grease-splatter screen to not only sculpt the hair's shape but also to diffuse the blasts of hairspray needed to aide in this gravity-defying feat they were achieving.
Here's just a few of the photos I took - I hope you enjoy them. I already had to grab a mannequin to play with and try out - there will be more to come on that front!
Feel free to share comments below! These styles tend to get people talking as they're not your everyday kinda styles!
PS - BC came in first place at the Secondary level - way to go, VCC on the Gold!
